Application Express Symposium PDF Print E-mail

APEX Sunday Symposium - Oracle APEX Development Team
This year the day is dedicated to presentations from the Oracle Application Express Development team. Learn first-hand about many of the exciting new capabilities as various members of the development team present on features they are responsible for in APEX 4.1. This is a rare opportunity for APEX developers to get a whole day of sessions where you can listen to those building the next release of your development tool.

Schedule Change! Please note!

8:30-9:30     Oracle Application Express - How It's Made
Joel Kallman
, Oracle Corporation

The process and requirements of developing Oracle Application Express mirror those of other Application Express development projects, but on a much grander scale.  Learn firsthand, from soup to nuts, how Oracle Application Express is made.  This session will cover the processes and tools used in the feature design, development, and production of Oracle Application Express - from the open source tools used to the development process to installation and regression testing.  Learn the best practices from the product development team and how they can be applied to your own environment.

9:30-10:30       Oracle Application Express: Master-Detail & Tabular Forms
Marc Sewtz, Oracle Corporation

Oracle Application Express provides declarative, easy-to use wizards for the creation of master-detail forms and tabular forms that allow updating multiple records simultaneously. These forms provide many common features out of the box, such a wide variety of form item types, built-in validations, lost-update protection, and the ability to update existing data and create new data in the database. This session will explore some of the more advanced customer requirements, such as building master-detail-detail and parent-child-grandchild pages, which are popular among Oracle Forms developers and Oracle Forms users.  The session will look at building complex validations that allow for referencing other column values and building tabular forms and master-details forms on different types of data structures, such as tables with multiple columns used as composite primary keys, shared foreign key / primary key columns, and using views with instead-of triggers. The session will also demonstrate how to further extend the built-in functionality using the APEX_APPLICATON and APEX_ITEM PL/SQL APIs.

10:30-10:45         Break

10:45-11:45         Oracle Application Express: Advanced Interactive Report Techniques
David Peake, Oracle Corporation

Interactive Reports has been one of the best APEX features since it was released.  Learn how to design Interactive Reports with more advanced Interactive reporting techniques.  This session will demonstrate how to extend Interactive reports using some of the built in features as well as using APEX views and APEX_UTIL PL/SQL APIs.  You will also learn all about the new features and enhancements planned in 4.1.

12:00-1:00           Lunch

1:00-2:00            Dynamic Actions + APEX_WEB_SERVICE, Like Chocolate and Peanut Butter
Jason Straub, Oracle Corporation

Dynamic Actions changed the way developers create very client interactive rich applications in Application Express by making those interactions declarative, instead of requiring you to fumble around writing your own JavaScript and AJAX. The APEX_WEB_SERVICE API provides a way for you to interact with virtually any Web service, anywhere you can write PL/SQL in Application Express. These two features were meant to be together, much like chocolate and peanut butter. This session will give a primer on both Dynamic Actions and the APEX_WEB_SERVICE API and show you how to make delicious Application Express applications by combining the two.

2:00-2:15              Break

2:15-3:15            Mastering Mobile User Interfaces and Themes for the Common Man
Shakeeb Rahman
, Oracle Corporation

Sure you can access your APEX application on your iPhone or mobile device, but is it truly the right experience you want to present to your users? Oracle Application Express 4.1 is being architected to help developers easily bring mobile capabilities to their APEX applications.  Learn how you can create mobile-specific APEX applications that look and feel like a native mobile application.  Then see how you can master the look and feel of every facet of these applications.

This session will cover the ins and outs of mobile user interfaces and APEX themes, including practical demonstrations of creating custom mobile themes with support for specialized layouts for phones or tablets.  The session will review and demonstrate how to minimize the use of external images for your UI.  And lastly, it will review the key differences between mobile and standard themes, and demonstrate how to customize some APEX elements such as Interactive Reports for mobile devices.

3:15-4:15            Oracle Application Express 4.1 New Features (Keynote)
Mike Hichwa, Oracle Corporation
David Peake, Oracle Corporation
