This session shows the process of identifying and resolving the most common SQL execution performance problems including, poor cardinality estimations, wrong access method being used, and much more. With clear how-to examples, you will learn how the Optimizer determines an execution plan, from the types of statistics it looks at, to the formulas it uses to calculate the cardinality estimates for each operation in the plan. Almost all ASO databases will require some degree of aggregation to achieve acceptable query performance, but - just as with BSO - there is a trade-off between 'calculation' and retrieval times. Selecting the right set of aggregate views within processing window constraints is therefore critical to the end-user experience. This session will begin with a review of the fundamentals of ASO aggregation, then cover the features available to make the view selection process more intelligent. Some more advanced and non-obvious techniques to maximize control over which aggregate views are selected will be described in detail, along with a number of ASO aggregation 'tips and tricks' not covered by the Administrator's Guide. Finally, a real world approach to tackling any given ASO aggregation design problem will be presented.

Anyone who has spent time working with Essbase will have experienced the frustration of a calculation script that 'looks just fine', but refuses to produce the correct results. This presentation will address some of the more subtle but perennial problems that catch even experienced developers out. Beginning with a review of the fundamentals of the Essbase calculation process, parallel calculation, various 'mode' options, configuration settings and calculation commands will be discussed in detail. Problems of block creation and calculation order will be addressed, and the pros and cons of various potential solutions evaluated. Attention will be paid throughout to getting code working without sacrificing performance.

The objective of the session is for Essbase developers to gain a more thorough understanding of the calculation engine in order to avoid 'classic' real-world pitfalls.

PL/SQL is Oracle’s procedural extension to SQL, and it is a true 3GL programming language. It was first introduced way back in version 6 of the database, giving us the ability to code “anonymous blocks” in our client applications and submit them for processing on the database. In Oracle 6, there were no stored procedures, no packages, and no triggers. The ability to store PL/SQL in the database came with version 7 in 1992.

Today, PL/SQL is competent, mature, and full-featured, offering everything you expect to find in a 3GL programming language. You know, the one with multiple columns in the select list that returns values not only to the select item but to several other page items? APEX’s new plug-ins allow you to add, as native functionality, features that normally are not available. Once created, plug-ins can be used in any application and are added to pages through the normal wizard process. This presentation will take an in-depth look at all the pieces needed to implement this Forms functionality in an APEX item plug-in. This will include all the PL/SQL API packages, the integration of JavaScript files, using standard and custom attributes, and much more. Companies running Oracle Financials have the same reporting challenges. They need to develop a method to reference account and cost center structure into ‘cost type’ accounts, which is used to prepare their financial statements. Additional complexity is added when these financial statements are required to be prepared in various ‘views’, i.e. Internal, Tax, and Audit. As an Essbase solution, the above can be met by embedding mapping logic into calculation scripts though it’s difficult to maintain by business users. This presentation introduces a framework based on Oracle/Hyperion technology that’ll not only address Oracle Financials’ reporting challenges, but also provide business users direct/easy access to maintain ‘cost type’ references. It further expands Essbase’s analytic capability by supporting drill-through to all ‘cost type’ accounts and views.

Our BugDB has tables, views, synonyms, PL/SQL units of all kinds, and objects of other types. There is always pressure to change these to correct minor problems and to bring new functionality. Historically, such changes have been bundled into planned quarterly outages. Edition-based redefinition (a.k.a. EBR), new in Oracle Database 11g Release 2, has changed the game. Learn about the new method of loading data and dimensions: ODI (Oracle Data Integrator).

The Metadata Load Utility is a configurable tool used to load dimensions and exchange rate data into Planning. The tool is a viable alternative to using ODI as it can be configured to run by scheduled batch, and can be encrypted. By the end of the presentation, the user will have ready to use scripts that can be used and easily configured to load metadata into any System 11 Classic Planning Application. Since HAL (Hyperion Application Link) has been discontinued, there have not been many options for loading of metadata. ODI is one option, but for just about all applications, metadata can more easily be uploaded using this utility. For EPMA applications, the ADS file process will be shown, and the process for integrating with Interface tables will be explained.

This session shows the process of identifying and resolving the most common SQL execution performance problems including, poor cardinality estimations, wrong access method being used, and much more. With clear how-to examples, you will learn how the Optimizer determines an execution plan, from the types of statistics it looks at, to the formulas it uses to calculate the cardinality estimates for each operation in the plan. By understanding how the Optimizer thinks, you will be able to determine if the execution plan you are looking at is the best plan you could get and, if not, why the Optimizer got it wrong. By applying some of the simple procedures explained in this session, you will be able to quickly resolve these issues without the necessity of Optimizer hints or messing with initialization parameters.

The execution plan for a SQL statement can often seem complicated and hard to understand. Determining if the execution plan you are looking at is the best plan you could get, or attempting to improve a poorly performing execution plan, can be a daunting task even for the most experience DBA or developer. This session examines the different aspects of an execution plan, from selectivity to parallel execution and explains what information you should be gleaming from the plan and how it affects the execution. It offers insight into what caused the Optimizer to make the decision it did as well as a set of corrective measures that can be used to improve each aspect of the plan.

The presentation will argue that any further Web development must be done using AJAX only. Almost all ASO databases will require some degree of aggregation to achieve acceptable query performance, but - just as with BSO - there is a trade-off between 'calculation' and retrieval times. Selecting the right set of aggregate views within processing window constraints is therefore critical to the end-user experience. This session will begin with a review of the fundamentals of ASO aggregation, then cover the features available to make the view selection process more intelligent. Some more advanced and non-obvious techniques to maximize control over which aggregate views are selected will be described in detail, along with a number of ASO aggregation 'tips and tricks' not covered by the Administrator's Guide. Finally, a real world approach to tackling any given ASO aggregation design problem will be presented.

Anyone who has spent time working with Essbase will have experienced the frustration of a calculation script that 'looks just fine', but refuses to produce the correct results. This presentation will address some of the more subtle but perennial problems that catch even experienced developers out. Beginning with a review of the fundamentals of the Essbase calculation process, parallel calculation, various 'mode' options, configuration settings and calculation commands will be discussed in detail. PL/SQL is Oracle’s procedural extension to SQL, and it is a true 3GL programming language. It was first introduced way back in version 6 of the database, giving us the ability to code “anonymous blocks” in our client applications and submit them for processing on the database. In Oracle 6, there were no stored procedures, no packages, and no triggers. The ability to store PL/SQL in the database came with version 7 in 1992.

Today, PL/SQL is competent, mature, and full-featured, offering everything you expect to find in a 3GL programming language. This session will look at why you should be using PL/SQL in your applications and cover the most important programming techniques that provide efficient, high-performance PL/SQL code.

Once created, plug-ins can be used in any application and are added to pages through the normal wizard process. This presentation will take an in-depth look at all the pieces needed to implement this Forms functionality in an APEX item plug-in. Companies running Oracle Financials have the same reporting challenges. They need to develop a method to reference account and cost center structure into ‘cost type’ accounts, which is used to prepare their financial statements. Additional complexity is added when these financial statements are required to be prepared in various ‘views’, i.e. Internal, Tax, and Audit. As an Essbase solution, the above can be met by embedding mapping logic into calculation scripts though it’s difficult to maintain by business users. The Metadata Load Utility is a configurable tool used to load dimensions and exchange rate data into Planning. The tool is a viable alternative to using ODI as it can be configured to run by scheduled batch, and can be encrypted. By the end of the presentation, the user will have ready to use scripts that can be used and easily configured to load metadata into any System 11 Classic Planning Application. Since HAL (Hyperion Application Link) has been discontinued, there have not been many options for loading of metadata. ODI is one option, but for just about all applications, metadata can more easily be uploaded using this utility. For EPMA applications, the ADS file process will be shown, and the process for integrating with Interface tables will be explained.

This session will demonstrate a client solution which utilizes Financial Data Quality Management, ERP Integrator, and Enterprise Performance Management Architect to automate data and metadata flows into Hyperion Financial Management. This session will focus on the metadata and data automation. The process was designed to enable full lights-out automation for data as well as metadata loading.

For so many, FDM is viewed simply as the 4 fish.  But FDM is an extraordinarily powerful tool that is capable of much, much more.  This session will explore some of the most common client data quality & automation needs that can be addressed through FDM scripting.  Over the course of the session, we will explore various script types (Event, Custom & Import) as well as their intended usage and best practices.  At the end of this session, a batch automation script will be created to illustrate the use of FDM's scripting tools.  This script can be used to automate the entire data load process, virtually eliminate the need for end users to perform the data load process.  This automation generally results in a close process that is more timely as well as accurate.

Microsoft has invested heavily in Office features for enabling BI on the desktop, and many enterprises have embraced Excel for BI. This session provides an overview of new and popular functionality built into Excel 2010. You’ll see how to create a PivotTable with a live connection to Oracle Database OLAP Option. This session will dive into fault handling in Oracle SOA Suite 11g using a case study based on automated invoice handling.
