If you plan on attending a session in Application Express, Fusion MIddleware, or SQL Developer, you will have the option to bring your own computer, or to use a pre-supplied computer (specifications here.)
The BI and Oracle EPM sessions will be conducted in the cloud, so you will need to bring your own laptop if you want to participate in these labs. You must have Microsoft's Terminal Services client installed before the conference. It's a standard part of the Windows install, here's the Mac download.
Application Express
Rather than being forced to choose just one lab session to attend, the APEX Development Team will be conducting an a-la-carte Hands-on Lab session where you get to choose the labs you're interested in. You have two hours to do as many or as few as you want from the smorgasbord below:
- APEX 101 - Designed for those new to APEX where you start from scratch and build an application.
- Interactive Reporting - Start with building basic Interactive Reports and progress to advanced reporting techniques.
- Charts, Gantts, and Maps - Learn how to build various chart types from basic to more advanced including Gantts and flash maps.
- Dynamic Actions - Instead of coding JavaScript and AJAX, use various Dynamic Actions to greatly improve client-side processing.
- Plug-ins - Want to add custom item types, regions, etc. to your application? Learn how using Plug-ins.

BI and Oracle EPM MONDAY
- 11:00AM - 1:00PM Using Actions to Integrate Oracle BI EE with External Systems
Adam Bloom, Oracle Corporation The Action Framework in Oracle Business Intelligence 11g extends the ability of a BI user to take Action at the point of Insight by either navigating to detail, or by invoking external methods, services, or functions. Now that Oracle BI 11g has been available for some time, this session will explore some use cases for Actions together with the specific technical integration details required to provide solutions. The session will also provide an insight into development activities around actionable intelligence and the thinking behind the functionality. In particular, this session will explore some of the following: BPM integration Calling Web Services (EPM, RTD, ODI) Security Policies Propagating Identity ADF Integration XPATH on Web Service Response Coding a target Web Service.
- 1:15PM - 3:30PM EPM Architect
Rudy Zucca, 123OLAP This lab focuses on building a Planning application from scratch using EPMA. We will walk through creating an application, managing the hierarchies manually in the editor, working with shared libraries, design strategies, and importing dimensions with flat files and interface tables.
- 4:00PM - 6:00PM Essbase Studio: The Basics and Beyond
Ron Moore, MTG In this hands-on lab, we will start at the beginning by creating a new data source from a relational database. We will create reusable dimension elements and then combine those elements to deploy a simple Essbase cube. Next we will enhance the simple cube with intermediate and advanced Essbase properties such as aliases, formulas, and other useful Essbase properties. Last we will deploy an XOLAP cube and use lineage tracking to assess the impact of changes.
TUESDAY
- 8:30AM - 10:45AM HFM Consolidation Rules
Rudy Zucca, 123OLAP Learn the basics of working with HFM Consolidation Rules. In this hand's on lab, we cover the fundamentals and most common consolidation rules you need to know. We end the lab with an overview of some of the best practices and more advanced rule concepts.
- 1:45PM - 5:30PM Installing the 11.1.2 Release Efficiently
John Booth, Emerging Solutions This lab focuses on installing the 11.1.2 Release in a distributed environment including the following products: HFM, FDM, Essbase, Planning, Essbase Analytics Link, Reports, and Analysis. We will walk through the base install, operating system settings, update to Oracle defaults, and discuss best practices and potential road-blocks.
WEDNESDAY
- 8:30AM - 10:45AM OBIEE on Essbase: The Future of Ad-hoc Analysis
Jamal Syed and Douglas Pilot, Emerging Solutions While Essbase and OBIEE are powerful separately, with the advent of OBIEE 11g, they are even stronger working together. If you've been using tools like Web Analysis and Interactive Reporting on Essbase, or if you've been using Answers and Dashboards on relational sources, come to this lab to learn how to use OBIEE+ 11g on Essbase. There will be introductory material for those who only know one side of the product set, and then the lab will launch right into hands-on exercises where you'll be able to learn how to use Essbase and OBIEE together in perfect bliss and harmony.
- 1:45PM - 5:15PM Oracle BI 11g Answers and Dashboards Hands-on Lab
Charles Elliot and Stewart Bryson, Rittman Mead In this hands-on lab, attendees will be taken through the new features in OBIEE 11g for reporting and dashboarding, including new graphing capabiities, mapping, OLAP analysis and dashboard prompts, using a relational dataset, and the most recent release of OBIEE. No prior knowledge of OBIEE is required, and by the end of the session, delegates will be able to create basic reports and dashboards using the new analysis and visualization capabilities of the tool.
THURSDAY
- 10:30AM - 12:45PM An Intro to ODI in the Hyperion Environment
Rudy Zucca, 123OLAP This lab covers the architecture and fundamentals of working with ODI in the context of EPM applications. Our exercises will focus on building dimensions and loading data for Planning from relational tables. This will give attendees basic knowledge to allow them to start working with ODI.
